Courses: 14 courses, the number of stopped strings and bass strings is a matter of discussion

The original instrument was possibly an 8 or 10 course lute. It was built by Hans Burkholtzer in Füssen in 1596 and is now shown in the Vienna Kunsthistorisches Museum as number SAM 44 as a 13 course baroque lute. A label inside says that Thomas Edlinger converted it to an 11 course lute, while it is not known who added the two more courses.

This archlute can be built with a string length from 65 to 69.5 centimetres. For the bass strings you can choose either twice or one and a half times the fretted string length. The stopped strings can be single or double strung.

If the 10th fret for instance should still be a tied gut fret, which seems to have been the rule for arciliuti, the string length would have to be longer than 69 cm. The bass strings then would be about either 105 cm or 142 cm long.
